Well, that was fast

May 3, 2011

I just saw this thing on News Hounds about how Fox Nation did a poll about who deserved the most  credit for killing bin Laden.  The poll in question had three options: Obama, Bush, the SEAL team.  The SEAL team had 73% believing they deserved the most credit, 23% stating Bush, and Obama with 4%.  I’m feeling compelled to call bullshit on this for a number of reasons.

  1. Now, the brave men and women of our military never get the credit and due they deserve and they warrant all the praise we can give them.  I have no problem with that part.  But don’t make them part of a political game.
  2. Bush?  This is the guy who said in 2006 that bin Laden was not a priority.  He had pretty much given up on trying to catch this guy.  Osama bin Laden was a terrorist mastermind and the head of the most coordinated terrorist network in the world and that administration had all but given up on getting him.  If Bush deserved any credit, he would have gotten it when they got bin Laden during his presidency.  Oh wait…
  3. It’s kind of sickening they were even asking this question.  This is clearly just trying to get people back onside in the bipartisan arena.  All this serves to do is polarize what should be a spirit of national unity.
  4. Probably the most important: who cares about the credit?  They got the job done.  There were a myriad of people involved.  Most of them don’t care about the credit.  They’re trying to take down the next part of al-Qaeda.

I’m just annoyed that we didn’t even make a week before the partisan bullshit started hitting the fan again.  I mean there’s this type of stuff and people criticizing the singing and chanting at baseball games or Ground Zero.  It was a very emotional moment for a lot of people.  It’s definitely not right to be faulting them for the way they reacted to it.

We had a chance to put the party lines aside for a little while and just work on some common ground.  Something that’s been missing in recent years.  Even if it was just for a little while, it would have been huge.  I think some people in Congress were talking about a spirit of unity not seen since 9/11.  In this Tea Party/24 Hour News/Political Extreme world, was that really even possible?
