Death of a Dream?

I feel I need to rant a bit.

So I’ve was checking up on Newshounds tonight.  I don’t know how many of you are familiar with this site, but its motto is “We watch FOX so you don’t have to.”  Basically they find clips from the various “news” programs that FOX News puts together and highlight the more fascinating tidbits.  I was watching this clip of the O’Reilly Factor where O’Reilly was discussing a criticism that George Soros made about FOX News being deceitful.  He and his guest discussed this, also touching on the current unrest in Wisconsin.  Now I know very little about Soros and his actual politics, but the quote they reference does raise a valid point.  FOX News does in fact engage in “newspeak” which of course is a term coined by George Orwell in his novel 1984.  A lot of the “news” you see on there is deliberately delivered to keep it’s base angry at someone or something.  Some might disagree with that, but I think it’s clearly there.

About Wisconsin… I don’t think anybody really believes this is a budget issue.  And even the brief touch on this topic was proof of that.  His guest made reference to the fact that various reports described the Tea Party as “mostly white”.  Which led to him pointing out that the Wisconsin protesters were mostly white.  I’m not going to get into the Tea Party angle, but there’s a reason why the protesters in Wisconsin would be mostly white:  as of 2009, the census indicated that the state was 89.4% white.  Not nearly as white as my state (96.2% here in the VT) but fairly high.  Nine out of ten people are white.  No other demographic composes more than 6.2% of the population.  So chances are the majority of protesters on either side are going to be white.  Whether or not the Tea Party was just a bunch of angry white folks who watched too much Glenn Beck is for someone else to decide.
