Definition of Funny?

April 1, 2010

So my parents recently got a hold of this email that had a joke included.  The basic gist of it was this:

Air Force One crashes in the midwest somewhere, in a random farmer’s field.  Local authorities arrive on the scene to see the farmer there.  They ask him if there were any survivors.  He says no and he’s buried all the bodies.  They ask him if he’s sure President Obama didn’t survive.

“He said he wasn’t,” the farmer said.  “But you know what a liar he is.”

Now, this wasn’t the exact joke, but it’s the general idea.  Now, I admit I have Democratic leanings, but where the actual humor in that?  Politicians are all liars?  That’s an old and beaten joke.  This joke has a ignorant farmer who apparently was burying people alive.  What is funny about that?  You suggest a politician is a liar, I just sigh and “yeaah.”  My point is, this is not funny or humorous in anyway.  I think we can do better.  Actually make an effort to be ironic and humorous.  This was a cheap attempt that should never have seen the light of day.  It’s like that Palin joke that Letterman told last year.  He probably never should have told that joke simply because it wasn’t funny and did little more than start a bullshit controversy.  He completely missed the mark on that one and took the resulting hits.

Point is, neither the Palin joke or the Obama joke I shared above were funny.  If you’re going to tell a joke, try to exercise a bit of actual comedic talent.
